“What are the facts about Greece that foreigners do not believe until they come to Greece?”
- While Greece does have many islands, most of the country is part of the European continent. So, there is more mainland than islands.
- language has no similarities, what-so-ever, with the languages of neighbor states. Nor with any other language. Yet, many Greek words are shared with many languages, especially those that refer to sciences.
- Greeks of the 21st century do not wear tunics nor move around in chariots. We are 21st century people, so are our clothes, our vehicles and most of our buildings.
- People do not brake plates anymore when dance. It was a habit about 40 years ago. It has faded out.
- It is not summer all year. Winters in Greece can get really cold. Some parts of Greece get -25 degrees Celsius, for a few months. And there are ski resorts that operate in Greece, from November to March.
- Greek not all work in the tourist industry. Only 4% of the population works in tourism-related jobs, many of them part-time.
- Do not tell a Greek that Greece owes your country money. It is foolish and does not prove anything. States and their citizens are not one and the same. Likewise, if I borrow from your brother, my cousin owes nothing to your uncle.
- Peoples not all impoverished. Unemployment is high, but 3 out of 4 people are doing ok. Only about 5% is unable to cover basic needs.
