Here are a couple tips:
Do your homework, and I mean a LOT of it.
If you looked up the train fare between cities in Europe such as Basel Switzerland and London, you might have been stunned. $590? There goes my budget. But a little more poking around and you find there’s an economy fare for $216, and if you have a student discount card, you can save another 10% or so.
Yet even more poking around and you find out that instead of taking the train you could fly via Ryan air from Basel to London for just $18.57.
Stay with friends… of friends… The original version of couch surfing is to stay with a friend, or a friend of a friend. That cot in the basement sure sounds good compared to $200 for a hotel that you’ll only sleep in for six hours.
Make your own coffee! This might sound petty, but for many people, coffee can be a major expense on a trip. 3 cups at $5 a pop at bars in Paris? that adds up quickly. Buy a metal screen/tea infuser and you won’t have to buy or carry any filters, just buy some local coffee, and add hot water, which usually isn’t hard to find, get for free, or make with a micro-appliance.
