Why you need to visit Spain?

For me “exciting” does not mean places, since you can see places anywhere. What is unique about Spain is its people and culture. Some examples:

  • Bullfighting. This is not for everyone, but it is an incredibly sophisticated and intricate art/sport. If you go to a bullfight be sure to read up on it, there is a lot of info on the web.
  • La Marcha. This is when Spaniards go out on the town en masse to hit the bars and discotheques. You can meet lots of cool people, drink till you’re silly, and have a lot of fun. If you don’t speak Spanish, you will always meet with people who can speak English during la Marcha. This is best in the bigger cities, like Madrid or Barcelona, but you find smaller versions of it in every Spanish city.
  • Tapas/pintxos. People talk about these all the time, and they really are some of the best food you will find in Spain. They are little dishes (originally they were supposed to “tapar” or cover a wine glass or beer glass) and if you go to the right bar the chef will have put a great deal of effort into making his/her tapas interesting and tasty. Plus they are cheap, a couple euros per.
  • Festivals, especially San Fermin, but also the Fallas and la Tomatina (where they throw tomatoes as each other)
  • The Camino de Santiago, the famous pilgrimge route across northern Spain. There is really no other way to get to know Spain so intimately as by doing the Camino, plus you meet lots of cool people.
