Learn some French. It does not need to be fluent (as for any other language, it has been months for months, if not the years of practice, while most people have at least basic skills in English), but being able to say hello, thank you and apologize in the Frenchwill. Try more useful tends to put us in a favorable mental state.
Do not go to a restaurant in a tourist and heavy area (except in the countryside). Do not hesitate to investigate in advance in Yelp and the like. In general terms, try not to fall by tourist traps; For example, do not take a drink in the vicinity of Notre-Dame or the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Do not hesitate to use public transport. They are reliable and cheap. Do not hesitate to walk, either: it is the best way to discover a city at your own pace.
If you are a US, you can find the persistence of disturbing smoking. Although smoking is in decline, there are still many smokers. Do not be openly critical, as this is considered rude and will not help you in the least. If the smoke bothered it, an educated application for smoking more or to fly the smoke elsewhere will normally be accommodated, but the strong expression of disgust will not be warm.
Meet the cliché food. Buy a good baguette and a croissant in a local bakery, go to a Fromagerie to know the French cheese. Just do not go to any bakery that publish advertisements in tourism-oriented magazines. A baguette costs a little over € 1, and a croissant maybe € 1.50 or € 1.80.
Speaking of clichés, French people are usually more distant than Americans. Apparently this gave us the reputation of being hostile, especially in Paris. Do not trust that cliché. It is only that the "distance from the right" is not the same here as in other parts of the world.
And finally, enjoy!
